Center, Winona Could Be Reopened Wednesday

Motorists passing through Warsaw are strongly urged to avoid the downtown east-west routes because of significant railroad work happening at several crossings.

In fact, Norfolk Southern repeated in its statement Monday that motorists should use U.S. 30 if possible.

“Motorists are strongly encouraged to be patient, plan extra travel time, and use U.S. 30 to cross town,” Norfolk said in a statement sent to city hall.

Railroad work at several crossings in Warsaw today will begin to snarl traffic in the downtown area as the rail replacement work continues to move north along Norfolk Southern’s tracks.

Today, the company’s rail gang – involving more than 50 people and numerous types of equipment – is expected to install new rail from Pope Street past Arthur Street.

Motorists faced closings for six or more hours, and all of these downtown crossings were likely to be closed at one time, the railroad warned in a statement sent to the city administration.

The city is issuing updates on the project as much as possible.

Mayor Joe Thallemer said they’ve focused on traffic control and keeping emergency services updated about changes.

Progress, he said, has been like tracking a “moving target,” but said Norfolk Southern has been good with communication.

“We’re asking for patience,” Thallemer said. “It’s not going to be easy, but hopefully, they’re going to try and get Winona (Avenue) and Center (Street) open Wednesday and that will be huge.”

Norfolk Southern was expected to install rail from Pope Street to just south of Fort Wayne Street today.

Crossings from Pope Street through Main Street were expected to be closed simultaneously most or all of today.

Crossing to the south, including CR 300S, CR 200S and Ranch Road were expected to be reopened by noon, giving motorists a path around the downtown on the city’s south side.

Arthur, Lyon and Fort Wayne streets will remain open until approximately 7 p.m. today and remain closed for much of Wednesday, the railroad company said.

Furthermore, Hickory Street will be closed to traffic for approximately two weeks, the statement said.

Crossings will be opened, as feasible, but may initially just be temporarily patched.

The city has been updating “social media and reliable media outlets about progress,” Thallemer said.

“We’re doing everything we can communicating. We’re acting as the bridge with the railroad and the community.”

Installation of rail was expected to begin in early July, but efforts to place rail along the tracks in preparation of the installation moved faster than expected.
