Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents Wednesday reviewed a request for a headstone in the cemetery to be moved.
Cemetery sexton Hal Heagy said the rules state that a two-lot stone can be no more than 40 feet high and 72 inches long.
In a letter, a resident requested a variance to leave the base of headstone at 79 inches with no extension. They also requested the headstone base be moved to cover two spaces. The stone currently sits on four spaces.
The base measures 32 feet high and 79 inches long. The 79-inches request would put the base over seven inches.
Board members Warren Tatter and Lewis Dobbins said rules are rules, and moving the headstone with a 79-inch base from two spaces to four spaces would be too large for the two-space area.
The board approved the headstone will be allowed to be moved if the base is reduced to 72 inches.
There were 13 burials at the cemetery in October, eight lots sold and six burial deeds were signed during the meeting.
Also during the meeting, Heagy presented the board with three bids for a 40-foot by 40-foot building addition that is being recommended to store seasonal equipment and an area for a break room for cemetery employees. Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety will review the building addition bids at its meeting Friday.
During its Monday night meeting, Warsaw City Council approved an Oakwood Cemetery ordinance to transfer $45,000 from the cemetery's permanent land fund into the permanent buildings fund for the building addition.
