Families wishing to honor relatives in Oakwood Cemetery's Legion Circle will only be allowed to display a granite plaque to keep consistent with current plaques in the cemetery.

The Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents approved a rule at its meeting Thursday night that will only allow granite 12 by 24 plaques to be displayed in the cemetery's Legion Circle.

The board discussed a Warsaw family's request at its Nov. 9 meeting for the family's relative to be buried in Oakwood Cemetery's Legion Circle with a bronze plaque.

Cemetery Sexton David Shaw informed the board that the plaques currently in Legion Circle are granite.

Board members expressed their concern with allowing a bronze plaque to be located among granite plaques.

"Too much of a variance in plaques causes problems," said board member Lewis Dobbins.

President Warren Tatter said he discussed the request with Bob Morrison, city council representative and American Legion Post 49 commander, and adjunct Legion member Mike Davis.

He said both agreed the plaques should remain consistent with the other granite plaques.

Tatter said he will inform John Sadler, funeral director for McHatton-Sadler, of the board's decision to only allow granite plaques.

Also during the meeting, the board elected members for 2007. Members serve two-year terms and were reappointed to positions they held in 2006.

Tatter will serve as president, Bob Sandy will serve as vice president and board member Lewis Dobbins and secretary Ellen Hoffer also were re- elected.

Shaw said there were eight foundations poured in November, six burials last month and seven deeds were signed during the meeting.

He also said there were 70 loads of leaves collected in November in the cemetery.
