Cemetery Board Approves Burial Rule Changes

Posted
Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents approved rule changes for burials during its meeting Thursday night.
The board approved that no burials will be started after 4 p.m. Any burials after 4 p.m. will result in a $500 charge to the person or company in charge of the burial. The fee may be waived if, in the opinion of the sexton, emergency circumstance exist which warrant a waiver.
The second rule change states all funeral processions while within the grounds will be subject to the control of the sexton or his assistants.
No casket will be opened within Oakwood Cemetery unless the sexton agrees that an emergency exists. If it is determined that a casket should be opened, it will be accomplished by the funeral director, supervised by the sexton.
In other business, Hal Heagy, Oakwood Cemetery sexton, said the cemetery is in the process of getting appraisals to purchase 3.451 acres of property that is in the southeast corner of the cemetery to be used for additional burial space.
The property is owned by Rosemary Parsons.
Heagy said there were 93 loads of leaves collected in the cemetery, and the cemetery is looking to purchase a leaf vacuum and is interested in hiring a groundskeeper.
During the meeting, the board heard there were 17 burials in the cemetery in November, 16 burial lots sold, and the board signed six burial deeds.
