Continuously serving Kosciusko County since 1854
Today starts the first series of events in the inaugural Celebrity Pro-Am Charity Classic at Stonehenge Golf Club.
A junior golf clinic featuring a golf show by Dennis Walters takes place starting at 1 p.m. today. The first tee time for the classic takes place at 1 p.m. Friday, and the day wraps up with a formal dinner party and awards presentation. On Saturday, the first tee time of day two event is at 10 a.m. The weekend finishes with a presentation of the championship trophies.
Celebrities scheduled to appear include Gary Collins, former Pittsburgh Steeler L.C. Greenwood, former Minnesota Viking Matt Blair and actors Frank Bonner (Herb Tarlek on WKRP), Michael Milhoan (Crimson Tide), Adam LaVorgna (Seventh Heaven), Tony Denman (Angel, Seventh Heaven), Kip Gilman (Trapper John, M.D.), Andy Chong (Pearl Harbor, Mission Impossible 2) and Peter Mackenzie (Speechless).
In the 1970s, Greenwood teamed with "Mean" Joe Greene on the left side of the Steelers' line at a time when its dominant defense was nicknamed the "Steel Curtain." Greenwood had 73 1/2 sacks and 14 fumble recoveries during his 13-year career.
Blair, an outside linebacker, played 12 years with the Minnesota Vikings. He was named to six straight Pro Bowls. Second on the Vikings' all-time tackle list, he is a member of the Silver All-Time Minnesota Vikings team.
Golf pros who will attend include PGA Tour member Jeff Cook, Tony Krebs of the U.S. Senior Open and Quinn Griffing, golf pro at Sycamore Golf Club in North Manchester.
Teams consist of one pro or one celebrity and three amateurs. Ticket prices to attend the event begin at $15.
The classic is hosted by The Dutch & Ford Foundation, a not-for-profit organization. Chairman is Ford Olinger, a local professional golfer who suffers from bilateral avascular necrosis, a degenerative hip condition. Money raised from the classic goes toward youth and disabled charities.
