CCAC Adds New Building

The City-County Athletic Complex in Warsaw has a new addition – a multi-sport building.
Located just off the CCAC’s pro shop, the new 60 x 80-foot building is currently housing batting tunnels, but will host many other sports in the months to come.
“We will have indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball and cornhole tournaments,” CCAC Director Karl Swihart said.
The building officially opens Thursday, but has already been seeing action.
Adult softball leagues have already begun contacting Swihart to rent time in the batting tunnels, but once the winter season rolls around, the building will be even busier.
“By November, it will pick up and be busy,” Swihart said. “It’s going to be busy all the time.”
Swihart received approval to build the complex in February, and five weeks later, it was constructed and ready for business.
To pay for the complex, the CCAC used its own funds, receiving a loan from Lake City Bank, and has also gotten approval for a $30,000 grant from the K21 Foundation.
Built with a 19-foot tall ceiling, it also has padded walls and an astroturf flooring that can be rolled up when basketball is being played.
It is the fourth indoor venue of its kind in northern Indiana, joining one in South Bend, Fort Wayne and Elkhart. However, Indianapolis also has one.
“The one in Indianapolis is larger,” Swihart said. “We have a smaller version of it.”
Along with giving athletes a place to enjoy warm-weather sports during the winter months, Swihart’s reason for constructing the building was also to attract visitors to the CCAC when there’s snow on the ground.
“Now we have activities in the winter, which is something we’ve never had before,” he said. “It’s also important to the community, because of the people it will bring in from out of town.”
Rental of the building is $35 per hour for the batting tunnels, although it will be $20 for half-hour sessions while softball tournaments are taking place.
The only other set price for renting the complex is $100 for an hour-and-a-half of soccer.
