Carl Wayne Johnston

Posted
BOURBON - Carl Wayne Johnston, the man who always said, "Mom learned me to work and I learned to like it," went to meet the Lord July 24, 2009. He was looking forward to a glorious reunion with his wife, Betty; his son, Carl Jr.; and a grandson, Joey Winkle, who preceded him in death.

He was born Oct. 21, 1917, the first son of Alva and Lilly Wyman Johnston.

He was devoted to his family and farming and felt privileged to make his living as a truck driver. He was a member of Plymouth Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, Bourbon American Legion and the local Teamster Union 364. When he was not driving truck or busy on the farm, he had a passion for "Big Band" music and loved to dance. Although one of his favorite sayings was, "Out of a little, take a little, and always leave a little, out of a little he took a little but blessed us with a 'lot' of love, compassion and humor."

He made a significant impact on the many lives he touched, including those who called him Pappy: Arthur Winkle, Bourbon; Richard Winkle and Bob Johnston, both of Indianapolis; Carl Johnston Jr., formerly of Culver; and especially those who lovingly referred to him as Daddy: Sharon Kitchen Repovg and Janet Kitchen Simpson, both of Indianapolis; Sandy Kitchen Knisely, Florida. He also is survived by 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Don, Nappanee; as well as many friends and wonderful neighbors. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Maynard.

A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon, with Pastor Tom Padberg of Hospice officiating. Burial will be in Stony Point Cemetery, Etna Green.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
