PLYMOUTH — Carl Junior Magnuson, 89, died at 2:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at Grace Village, Winona Lake.
Carl was born Dec. 27, 1927, at home, in Darlow, Kan., to the late Carl S. and Hattie B. Nelson Magnuson.
He attended Jimtown and Mishawaka high schools and graduated from LaPaz High School in the class of 1945. He also graduated from the South Bend College of Commerce in accounting.
While employed at Bendix Products division he met Laura Mae Clark from Galien, Mich. They married on June 24, 1950, and had six daughters: Carolyn (Marshall) Fry, Defiance, Ohio; Cindy (Art) Bushen, Warsaw; Peggy (Jeff) Riffle, Charlotte, Mich.; Patricia (Gordon) Gilbert, Plymouth; Carla (Dennis) Waddill, Winona, Texas; and Cheryl (Jesse) DeBoest, Warsaw. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Laura passed away April 26, 2000.
On Jan. 6, 2001, Carl married Mary Hobson in LaPaz. She survives him along with two stepchildren to Carl, Janet (Robert) Covill, Battle Creek, Mich., and Jon (Jackie) Hobson, Queen Valley, Ariz. He is also survived by six stepgrandchildren, 14 stepgreat-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.
Also surviving are three brothers and one sister: John (Mary) Magnuson, Sebring, Fla.; Ivan (Shirley) Magnuson, Plymouth; Ralph (Treva) Magnuson, Sebring; and Cleo (Bob) Shidler, LaPaz; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Norman Dale Magnuson; and two sisters, Wanda Lemert and Alta Kime.
Carl served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was employed as a cost accountant at Bendix, now Honeywell, for almost 40 years. He served 10 years on the Union-North Building Corp. Board of Trustees and 16 years on the Union North Board of School Trustees.
He was a hobby farmer, woodworker and collector of toy cars. He recently indulged in painting and Wii game bowling, and embraced technology while researching his family tree on his computer.
A member of Calvary Baptist Church, LaPaz, he served as a deacon, trustee, treasurer and Sunday school teacher.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Sept. 1, at Calvary Baptist Church, 330 Cortland St., LaPaz.
Funeral services will be at the church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, with calling one hour prior. Pastor Nathan Rettinger, assisted by Steve Partridge, will officiate.
Burial will follow in New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth, with military honors provided by members of Plymouth American Legion Post 27, Veterans of Foreign Wars Marshall County Post 1162 and the DAV.
