MENTONE – Carey D. Landis, 101, formerly of Mentone, died at 12:55 a.m. March 24, 2013, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Wabash.
He was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Kosciusko County, to John and Sadie Dirck Landis. On Aug. 1, 1953, in Winona Lake, he married Jessie F. Thomas, who died Sept. 30, 1979.
He had been a bus driver for Talma School and also was a carpenter and an electrician. He worked at the hardware in Mentone and farmed in his early years.
He was a 1930 graduate of Talma High School and a member of Packerton United Methodist Church. He was a Mentone volunteer fireman for more than 25 years, where he was named Fireman of the Year as well as Kosciusko County Fireman of the Year. He was a lifetime member of Indiana Volunteer Fireman Association. He enjoyed fishing and loved sports, especially going to basketball and baseball games.
Surviving are a son, Wayne L. (and spouse Beth) Landis, Mentone; and two grandsons, Zachary and Jeremiah Landis, both of Mentone. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Shafer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at King Memorial Home, Mentone, with Pastor Bill Wood officiating. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery.
Calling is from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with a fireman’s memorial service at 7 p.m.
