MILFORD - A Marion man is in fair condition after his car was struck by a train Thursday evening near Milford.
Lymon B. Hall, 74, was westbound on CR 900N about 4:05 p.m. and crossed in front of the southbound Norfolk Southern train. Hall told police that although he was familiar with the crossing and the intersection, he didn't see the train as he approached the crossing and didn't have time to react or avoid the train.
Hall's car was struck in the rear passenger side by the lead engine of the 75-car train. Upon impact, the car was spun around nearly 360 degrees, struck a sign post and came to rest west of the tracks and south of the crossing. Hall suffered internal abdominal injuries and was admitted to Goshen General Hospital, where officials this morning reported he was in fair condition.
The train engineer was James Manley, 28, of Marion, and the conductor was Mike Fetterhoff, 26, of Marion. Neither was injured.
The crossing, on CR 900N, 40 feet west of Old Ind. 15, is marked with a crossbuck only. A Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report indicated that the train's headlight, flashing lights, bell and horn were all in working order.
