Candidates For Auditor Explain Why They’re The Person To Vote For On May 3Republican candidates for county auditor - Rhonda Helser and Chasity Sandy - were asked to answer two questions during Wednesday evening’s candidate forum.

First, they were asked to introduce themselves and explain why they are running for the office of the auditor.

Helser said she has the proven experience, education and leadership that is needed to be in the auditor’s office.

Sandy said she has worked for the auditor’s office for 28 years. During that time, she has done several projects including to help build the county’s Beacon site, online forms, etc.

“I feel a drive just to serve my community just a little more than what I have been serving,” Sandy said.

The second question posed to the women was: What do you believe are the skill sets needed to be an auditor and how does your experience make you a good candidate?

Sandy said that to be a good auditor, a person needs to have a good understanding of what the office entails.

“A lot of people know that the auditor is the fiscal operator ... but there’s a lot more that goes with it. There’s a lot of day-to-day information that needs to go with it. A lot of responsibility. A lot of leadership, knowledge of the past of what we’ve gone through and what past auditors have dealt with and how to get through those challenges to come to a good decision that need to be made for the issues,” Sandy said.

Helser’s response was, “The auditor’s office, you need to have a good skill set to be able to process budgets. You are the secretary to the County Commissioners and to the County Council. I feel like I have done that. I’ve been at previous meetings and have taken notes. I have a bookkeeping background, experience. I have leadership experience that is needed in the office to assist people coming in and asking questions. So I believe I have the background for budgets, knowing the elected officials that I?have had contact with.”

Wednesday’s candidate forum was the first one of two, with the second scheduled for 5 p.m. April 27 at City Hall. Seating is limited but the forum also is being livestreamed on the city of Warsaw’s website and Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce’s website, as well as aired on News Now Warsaw 1480AM and 99.7FM. The April 27 forum will feature candidates for recorder, County Council and sheriff. The forum was organized by the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce, Kensington Media, the Times-Union and InkFree News.
