Candidates File For Town Offices

Posted

While Warsaw, Winona Lake and Syracuse held primary elections to determine city and town council representatives, candidates in towns with populations of less than 3,500 had until noon Aug. 1 to file for office.

In cases where four or more candidates in a major political party are running for three available at-large town council seats or two or more are running for the clerk-treasurer's office, a town nominating convention must be held by Aug. 20.

In North Webster, Mentone and Silver Lake Republican conventions will be held to select candidates for town council. The Democrats also will hold a convention in Mentone.

North Webster

In North Webster, Republican town chairman Mark Grady has called the convention for Monday at 7 p.m. at the Tippecanoe Township Community Building, 102 S. Morgan St.

Incumbent clerk-treasurer Margaret "Peg" Lawrance faces a challenge by Lisa Strombeck Francis.

Current town council officeholders Kay Andrews, Ken Wagner and Jeff Morgan as well as challengers Travis Marsh, Dan Thystrup, John Routh, Jon Sroufe and Burdette "Tony" Strombeck, seek a place on the fall election ballot.

Mentone

Conventions have not been scheduled in Mentone as of press time.

At the GOP convention, voters will select either Barbara Ross or Amy Cohagan as clerk-treasurer.

Republicans also will sort out town council candidates between incumbent Mark Hughes and challengers Lynn Phillips, James Eads and Jack Simpson.

Democrats will vote for Timothy Croy, Edward Reed, Terry Reed and Forrest Kantner.

Silver Lake

Silver Lake's town convention is Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lion's Club building. Deb Lotz is town chairman.

A clerk-treasurer Republican nominee will be selected between incumbent Teresa Howell and Angela Glass.

Three Republicans will be chosen among the seven who filed for town council: Lovina Fern Strong, Robert Clark, Phil Shalley, Ronald Jones, Stanley Williams, Thomas Waite and Sara Cotton.

Sidney

Republican voters have been called by chairman Sherrill Day to attend a town convention Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Sidney Fire Station.

A clerk-treasurer will be selected between incumbent Lana D. Wolfe and Marcia J. Dierks.

Milford

Milford's town convention is Aug. 19 and will be held at 7:30 p.m. in town hall. Bob Beer is town chairman.

Registered Republican voters will hear from the town council's District 2 candidates - Joe Carrillo and Gary Hurd - and vote for one.

Nominating convention notices must be posted 72 hours (three days) prior to the event. One notice must be in the clerk-treasurer's office; the other two must be posted in another public place.
