Cancer Awareness

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sadly, most of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. It has no border or boundaries. In fact, nearly every Warsaw Community Public Library staff member has been touched by breast cancer, either directly or indirectly. As a result, WCPL is joining the fight against breast cancer during October.

Warsaw Library will be having a "Pink Out" Day on Monday, to raise community awareness. During that day, staff members will be wearing pink tops to remind people that life is too valuable to let this disease claim friends or loved ones. Library visitors, area residents, and businesses are also encouraged to join us in wearing pink on that day ... to "pink out."

Research shows that one in every eight women will get breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. In fact, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes in the United States and every 29 seconds around the world and can strike men as well. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Even the most masculine man should rethink wearing pink when it comes to supporting a great cause.

Breast cancer bookmarks and information sheets on early detection and warning signs will be available at the circulation desk. Library visitors can also sign a banner of support in the front lobby to honor survivors, those who have lost their battle against breast cancer, or even to share their success story. A special book display on breast cancer will be on exhibit on the second level and available for check out.

"Think Pink" and visit us on "Pink Out" Day, sign the banner, pick up free information sheets, and attend the breast cancer yoga class later in the evening. Our hope is that every woman will take advantage of the information available to them and encourage their mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces and friends to do the same.

Wear pink on Pink Out day at the library on Monday. Write encouraging notes to those battling breast cancer, notes in memory of victims, or notes of victory on our lobby banner.
