Editor, Times-Union: In the early 1980s the water supply at Camp Lejeune, located in North Carolina, was found to be contaminated.
Among the toxins found in the water supply were trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PEC). Both of these chemicals have been linked to numerous types of cancers and many other life-threatening diseases. These are just two of the worst of many toxins found in the water supply.
This problem has been going on since 1957. So, can you imagine how many service men and women have been poisoned? And we must also remember the civilians that were just visitors or who were employees at Camp Lejeune. I know my family was a victim, because my sister lost her husband of 25 years to cancer. And he was born at Camp Lejeune in 1961. His mother carried him for nine months while drinking and bathing in the water that was contaminated by these deadly toxins. And on Nov. 7, 2010, he passed away. He was exposed to these toxins for three years. And even today there are still a lot of unanswered questions about his sudden death.
So, I urge anyone that was at Camp Lejeune between the years of 1957-1987 to go to www.marines.mil/elwater and see if you or your family was affected by this tragedy. God bless our heroes of yesterday, today and those who follow.
