Editor, Times-Union: There has been much talk of Confined Animal Feeding Operations and their effects in the paper lately. I just want the area residents to know the enormity of the issue.
In the past month, IDEM has approved operations housing 873,576 chickens and 71,479 pigs in Kosciusko and surrounding counties. This month’s pending projects are an additional 940,800 chickens and 210,532 pigs.
Most of these projects will be permitted. What numbers will next month bring? I think we may want to consider that this is plenty for our area and stop there. How many communities do we need to impact before this becomes a real problem?
