MISHAWAKA – Maxine Schnapp, 77, died March 8, 2012, in St. Joe Regional Medical Center, after complications from a stroke June 1. She was surrounded by her entire family.
She was born Nov. 25, 1933, in Warsaw, to Caleb and Viola Howe. On Jan. 4, 1958, in Hamilton, Ohio, she married Anthony P. Schnapp, who survives.
She was a member of St. Ann Ladies Society, Hamilton, and Veterans of Foreign Wars 360, Mishawaka, and was president of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post 161. She volunteered countless hours at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Mishawaka, putting together braille books of the bible. She worked at the Casualty Insurance Co., Hamilton, for seven years and most recently at the Notre Dame Alumni Club, South Bend. She assisted her husband with his military burial squad from VFW 360 in more than 3,000 military burials.
Also surviving are five children: Caroline (and spouse Thomas) Kovatch, South Bend; Christina (and spouse David) Diltz, Granger; Julia Schnapp, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Timothy Schnapp (and Wanda House), Buchanan, Mich.; and Thomas (Renie Post), Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son and two sisters.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. today at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Granger, with the Rev. Daniel Scheidt officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.
