An alleged drunk driver who reportedly left the scene of an accident Tuesday evening was pursued and apprehended by witnesses, who detained him until police arrived.

Dennis W. Seffens, 33, of 924 E. Main St., Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and public intoxication after the 6:53 p.m. incident. A blood test administered about one-half hour after the accident revealed Seffens' blood-alcohol level to be .219 percent and he was then also charged with driving while intoxicated.

Seffens reportedly told police that he didn't remain at the scene of the accident because it wasn't his fault. He contends that he had a green light when he crossed Detroit Street and traveled westbound on Fort Wayne Street, which is designated one-way eastbound.

However, the driver of the other car, Kurt J. Kralis, 19, East Forest Circle, Warsaw, and witnesses to the accident told police that the light was green for traffic on Detroit Street and red for traffic on Fort Wayne Street.

After the accident occurred, Seffens reportedly continued westbound on Fort Wayne Street and was followed by two of the witnesses and stopped on Main Street. Seffens was being physically detained by Daniel Hilliard and Michael Kittrell, both of Warsaw, when Warsaw police arrived. Kittrell told police that he removed the keys from Seffens' car so that he could not leave again.
