Byron Resigns As Warsaw Volleyball Coach

After three years at the helm of Warsaw's volleyball team, Jamie Byron has resigned.

"I felt it was time to spend more time with my family," said Byron. "Volleyball takes up a big portion of time, and I want to be able to spend it with my family.

"My husband (Mike Byron) is an athletic director (at Triton), and he can't very well quit his job. This way we can spend more time together."

Byron led the Tigers to the Delta Semistate in 1996, her first year at Warsaw. That year, the Tigers finished with a 24-15 record overall, and they tied for first place in the Northern Lakes Conference with a 5-1 record.

Bryon led the Warsaw volleyball team a sectional championship in 1997 with a 19-15 record. That year the Tigers tied for third place in the NLC with a 4-2 record.

This year's 14-19 Tigers were eliminated in the first game of the Concord Sectional when they were defeated by Elkhart Central 15-13, 16-14, 15-5. They went 4-2 and tied for third place in the NLC.

The Tigers were 57-49 overall and 13-5 in the NLC in Byron's three years.

Byron replaced Peggy Salm, who won more than 200 matches and guided the Tigers to six straight NLC titles. The Tigers at one point won 49 straight NLC matches under Salm and Byron before the loss in 1996, which came to Concord.

Byron came under fire earlier this year after cutting several sophomores from the program while keeping many freshmen. When asked if this was a factor in her decision to resign, Byron said "No."

She also said that she was not pressured to leave.

Will she coach again?

"Maybe in the future," she said. "I've had a good time with these girls."

"She's done a great job with the volleyball team," said Warsaw Athletic Director Dave Fulkerson. "I hate to see her go."
