All summer I have been "wowed" by the flowers in Center Lake Park and the flowers around all the Zimmer buildings. I did some inquiries and found out that the people who planted these flower beds all bought their plants locally. Then I hear that the Warsaw Parks Department, who is in charge of planting the flower beds in downtown Warsaw, buys their plants out of town - they even go out of county.
Warsaw Parks Department, have you not heard about the "Buy Local" movement? It is being advertised, blogged about, talked about and has had a wonderful impact on many communities. Even Lake City Bank is promoting "Be Smart - Think Local First".
Here are some of the very good reasons that I recently read on a blog.
1. Shopping locally preserves the vitality and character of a community. It strengthens our local economy.
2. Money spent local stays local.
3. Local business owners have a vested interest in the community. After all, they live, work and most of all pay the property taxes. And by the way, Warsaw Parks Department, those taxes pay your wages. It also supports our schools, library and city government.
I want to thank Janet Essig and Zimmer for supporting our wonderful town of Warsaw and for making our surroundings more beautiful - and shame on you, Warsaw Parks Department.
