Cowan, Barkey Finish RELITE Program
Kosciusko REMC employees Emily Cowan and Curt Barkey have completed the 2009 Rural Electric Leaders-In-Training Exchange, or RELITE program, graduating Nov. 16 at the Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives headquarters in Indianapolis.
This nationally-recognized leadership development program included participants from electric cooperative systems throughout Indiana.
The two-year program is designed "to create a broadened environment of networking and community experience that will develop electric utility employees into knowledgeable, committed and effective leaders for their companies and their communities."
Cowan, Barkey and 22 other participants in their class attended nine professional development days from April through October.
Although electric industry education is the primary focus of the RELITE program, it also provided a learning environment for leadership skills, team building, interpersonal communications, and accountability.
Cowan noted that the greatest benefit of course participation was "The different aspects of the program help develop an employee both personally and professionally. We learned about balancing your life so you can be the best employee possible."
Barkey commented that the program helped him realize that "when you're dealing with a bunch of different people on projects that range from employees to vendors, each one is different and has different ideas. Not one idea is wrong and not one idea is right. However, the collective of all the ideas is what makes anything work to its greatest potential."
In 2010, Cowan and Barkey will participate in the second half of the program, switching roles from participants to facilitators. They will be responsible for program planning and facilitation, putting their own mark on the program. This ensures that as graduates apply their recently acquired leadership skills, future RELITE training will be continually adjusted to meet the ever-changing needs of the workplace.
Cowan serves as Customer Service/Billing Supervisor, and Barkey is the Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst for KREMC.
KREMC is a member-owned Touchstone Energy® electric cooperative serving over 17,000 members throughout Kosciusko County and into surrounding counties.
