Bullies

Editor, Times-Union:
I’m a fifth grade student at Harrison Elementary School. When I walk through the halls, I see kids getting picked on.  This also happens at other schools and it has a negative affect on our community.  I think kids should not bully other kids.  I am positive that something needs to be changed.

First of all, you should treat people how you want to be treated.  Most kids don’t realize the victim’s feelings when they bully and they don’t see how they would feel if they were the victim.  Most kids are scared to tell anyone because they’re afraid it will keep happening and it will get worse.  I thought the same thing a couple of times and I just let them pick on me. Then I started to make good comebacks to the bullies that wouldn’t hurt their feelings. One example I’ve heard is someone calling a student Rudolph because that person thought the student had acne on her nose.  The student said, “Well Rudolph is cute. Only older people have acne and they’re responsible.” That student made it seem like the bully gave her a compliment.

In addition, there is no good reason or explanation for people to be bullies. It is unacceptable and inexcusable because it could lower a victim’s self-esteem and soon they will believe the bully if something doesn’t happen fast. If they believe what the bully is saying to them, they might begin to have problems or even hurt themselves.

Lastly, everyone deserves to be treated well.  No one deserves to be told they can’t do something or be beaten because of their gender or their size. For example, a kid that is really tall could beat up a small kid.  That has happened to me. Kids kick me or pretend to trip over me because I am so much smaller than them.  I have had a boy tell me I can’t do something because I am a girl.

If you want to help out with this problem, stick up for bullying victims or tell someone. Thank you for helping. We can stop bullying.
