Editor, Times-Union: Everybody has an opinion about the problem of the school building project and here’s mine. A little background – every action has a consequence, sometimes the outcome may take years to come to a head. We have heard bigger is better. Warsaw Community School needed more money, so they invited Atwood, Claypool, Leesburg and Silver Lake under the umbrella of Warsaw Schools. More students, more money from the state from property taxes, but Warsaw School had to maintain the buildings. Remember several years ago when the superintendent wanted to close Atwood, Claypool, and Silver Lake because their buildings were no longer within standards. The parents were very upset, rightfully so, a school is the heart of a small town – lose a school, the town dies. School board relented on Claypool, but still closed Atwood and Silver Lake. This action did two things, overcrowding our other schools and Warsaw no longer can maintain those properties anymore. Now to the present, the formula for property taxes have changed, inflation has increased everything from gas to wages. Everybody knows that it is cheaper to maintain a new building than an older building. State government has changed the process on building with a referendum. Before property owners didn’t have a choice, but now we do. We can vote. I never read in the Times-Union, what would happen if the referendum failed. Does anybody know. Paul Fribley Warsaw
