Building Bridges Of Friendship

Posted

Pierceton Elementary School just finished an after-school program for fourth- and fifth-grade students titled 'Building Bridges of Friendship'. The class was taught by Michelle Ball. Ball offered the class as a follow-up project for a grant received from the Lilly Endowment. During the six-week program, students learned about Anne Frank. She was Adolf Hitler's most famous victim. Had the Gestapo sergeant known that he actually held Anne's diary in his hands at the time of her capture, he would have instantly destroyed it. Fate intervened, and he overlooked the diary. The rest is history. Students had the opportunity to learn about causes of World War II, events of the Holocaust, persecution of the Jewish people, and enjoyed a visit from World War II veteran, Gene Messmore. Pictured is Jocelyn Courtney, fourth-grade student at PES. Courtney is just one of the students making a commitment; taking a stand against discrimination and pursuing peace as we move forward into our future.
