INDIANAPOLIS – Warsaw Community High School senior Jarred Brooks captured the state championship that had been eluding him Saturday night.
In his third appearance at the wrestling state finals, held at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Brooks captured the 113-pound state championship by defeating Yorktown junior Schuyler Phillips with an 18-6 major decision.
En rout to the title, Brooks pinned New Palestine junior Taylor Fee in a time of 3:41, advancing out of Friday's first-round competition and into Saturday's quarterfinals.
In the quarters, which began Saturday morning, Brooks posted another pin, this time taking down Fairfield sophomore Forrest Glogouski in 4:54.
Facing Perry Meridian freshman Brandon James, who's ranked second in the state, in the semifinals, Brooks advanced to his second-straight state championship match with a 7-1 decision.
The state championship match pitted the state's third-ranked wrestler, Phillips, against Brooks, the state's and nation's top-ranked wrestler.
The victory left Brooks with an overall season record of 38-0 and gave him a career record of 132-6.
Brooks is the first Warsaw wrestler to win state since senior Mark Whitehead won the 185-pound title as a senior in 1985.
Brooks is the first area wrestler to win a state title since Kevin Carr won the 160-pound title as a senior in 1999.
