Santa To Visit Pierceton PIERCETON – Santa Claus will make his annual visit to Pierceton Dec. 21 at the Community Building in Pierceton at 6 p.m. He will arrive and be escorted by the fire department with sirens sounding. Attendees may frost cookies, enjoy hot chocolate and popcorn and children may serve coffee and cookies to their parents.
Democrats Set Christmas Party The Kosciukso County Democrat party invites the community to its Christmas party Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. The party is at the Democrat headquarters at 417 E. Winona Avenue. The community is encouraged to bring a snack to share. Non-perishable items will be collected for Combined Community Services.
Christmas Countdown Set Celebrate the holiday season with crafts, hot cocoa, cookies, music and more Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Center Lake Pavilion. Santa will make an appearance at the event, so bring your camera to snap a picture of the kids.
YMCA Sets Basketball Program Registration is going on now for YMCA Youth Basketball, where children grades 2 through 4 can learn basic skills in a positive environment. The YMCA emphasizes participation, fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship and having fun over winning. Basketball games are played on Saturdays, with practices on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Games start Jan. 12 and run until Feb. 23. Again this year, the league will work with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants from the National Basketball Developmental League. The Ants will be coming to the YMCA to run a clinic where the kids will learn skills from the players themselves Jan. 30. All YMCA youth basketball players will also receive a game ticket good for any home Mad Ants game during their season, a T-shirt, basketball and award. YMCA Plans Frigid 5K New Year’s Day Kosciusko Community YMCA will host its annual Frigid 5K Road Race New Year’s Day. Runners will start the race across the street from the YMCA at the fairgrounds, run through Winona Lake and finish at the fairgrounds. Race day registration, packet pickup and warm-ups will be inside the YMCA starting at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 1. The race will start at 1 p.m. Age group awards will be given out at the awards ceremony following the race. Chili also will be served. Stop by the YMCA on Smith Street in Warsaw or on Main Street in North Webster to register. Registration also is available at www.kcymca.org
County Receives Federal Funding For Emergency Food/Shelter Programs The Local Emergency Food and Shelter Programs Board for Kosciusko County has received notice that Kosciusko County is being awarded $11,786 through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. Federal funds are awarded through the Department of Homeland Security. A national board was established to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. The local board is made up of representatives from local government and non-profit agencies in Kosciusko County. They met Sept. 25 to review funding requests from qualifying agencies. The local board is responsible for determining how these funds, and any additional funds made available, are to be distributed among the applicants. Emergency Food and Shelter funds will be allocated to North Webster Area Community Services, Combined Community Services, Fellowship Missions and the Kosciusko County Shelter for Abuse.
