I would like to thank the Times-Union for publishing the list of petition signers in regards to the homeless shelter. I am not surprised that we continue to see the NIMBY theory. I am surprised to see that happening in our business community as well.
I have lived in other areas of the Unites States where their homeless shelters are downtown. I have volunteered my time, food, used clothing, books/toys and service at those facilities. How else do we expect the homeless to find the shelter, or to be able to find work without transportation, or gain easy access to the systems they need to get back on their feet?
We should be reminded that many of us could find ourselves in this same position if we were to lose our jobs (and benefits). I do know that during this holiday season I will be looking for other establishments for: shoes, insurance, investments, photos, coffee, music lessons/instruments, deli sandwiches, gifts/crafts, a drink with friends, cosmetics, seamstress, used auto, designs, jewelry, chocolate, floral designs, alcohol, printing, children's clothing, etc.
I am curious as to whether there was a similar petition when they built the new justice building? Was there fear of those released as well? Where would you rather a homeless shelter be located?
