Boy Scouts Wiggle Their Way Through ‘Slot Canyons’ In UtahTwenty-one members of Boy Scout Troop 715 of Warsaw spent two weeks out west on one of their annual High Adventure Camping Trips.
Traveling in a group of four vehicles, they reached their first camping site in the Green River State Park in central Utah on the third day. From there, they headed south through Capital Reef National Park and Escalante Petrified Forest. Upon reaching the town of Escalante, they set up camp again. Two days were spent there, so they could some hiking in the famous Slot Canyons of Utah.
In these canyons, you had to check the weather for 50 miles in all directions before going. Being caught in a slot canyon during a flash flood could be deadly. During the hiking, very large boulders had to be scaled over, sandstone slides had to be carefully slid down, and in a lot of places there was not much wiggle room. One long slot was measured at only 10 inches wide.
The next stop was at Dog Town, USA – the largest pet refuge in the world. Almost any kind of animal or bird found a home there and it was one of the first no-kill shelters. Even though it is in the middle of a desert, people from many states came there to give an animal a home. The Scouts were hoping to provide some hours of community service to the shelter, but they had all the volunteers they could use that day.
Then it was on to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Three nights were spent there and a hike down inside of the canyon to the Roaring Springs campground was beautiful, according to a news release provided. Wild bison roamed the meadows on the north side.
More hiking was done in the San Juan Mountains near Ridgeway, Colo. Two nights of primitive camping was done in a quiet meadow at the base of the East Dallas trailhead that leads to the upper and lower Blue Lakes. Going up this trail you have to cross through streams and snow to reach the Blue Lakes, which at about 11,000 feet.
The last adventure was a white-water rafting trip down the Arkansas River in Browns Canyon near Buena Vista.
