Troop 715 adult leader Joe Hawn organized a Rifle Merit Badge Clinic for the Boy Scout members of his Troop.
Most of the school kids in Warsaw know Hawn as the DARE officer.
Assisted by fellow police officer David Morales and friend Tim Ihmen, Hawn instructed the Scouts on gun safety.
Different types of handguns, rifles and shotguns were discussed. Information was taught about those with safety mechanisms and those without. The different type of shells and cartridges were shown and their loads were discussed. Know your target and what may be behind it was talked about, plus how far the different loads may travel.
Each Scout had to score points on a target using a .22 single shot rifle. They were also required to wear goggles and ear plugs.
After each Scout completed the shooting requirement, the group went into the Scout building. There they were taught how to tear down and clean the different types of guns in a safe manner.
