BOW Reviews Departmental Issues

Posted

Numerous departmental issues were reviewed during Warsaw's Board of Public Works and Safety Friday, including eight contracts for various Central Park events to be held this summer.

Musical entertainment agreements were approved for upcoming summer festivities, including a $2,500 contract with Cook and Belle for the July 28 Country Concert.

The parks department also was approved for an agreement regarding landscaping maintenance of trees at Pike and Center Lakes, as well as a WCDC agreement for the Fourth of July firework display, held July 1.

In related matters, the board acknowledged the department's acceptance of the Glover Pavilion, a structure donated by Richard Glover through the Kosciusko County Community Foundation.

The waste water treatment utility department was granted the installation of a power factor correction unit, which is projected to save the department $11,679.44 in electrical costs by running pool motors more efficiently.

The device will run on a 30-day trial run to determine if its installation will be beneficial at reducing the department's overhead costs.

"In a time of continuously increasing energy costs, this device caught my attention," WWTU Director Dave Henderson said. "I'm curious to see if it does what they say it will."

The approval of the device is dependent on the results of the first month.

Henderson presented additional requests for the WWTU department, including a $6,265 contract with Kiefer Consulting for soil sampling and analysis for land application events, and a ABM contract for copier maintenance and supplies. Both were approved.

The board approved grant money requests, presented by Warsaw Police Department Capt. Perry Hunter, to fund equipment for Operation Pullover and the purchase of two K-9 narcotic units.

The retirement of Lt. Larry Engle also was announced.

Fire Department contracts were approved, allowing for a grant application for Family Safety Day and a contract involving inspection of all ground ladders used by firefighters.

The board also:

• Tabled a request by the street department for emergency trash pick-up services through Stafford Solid Waste. Attorney Mike Valentine wants to rewrite wording in the contract to better identify charges for Stafford's services.

• Approved a VIM Recycling contract for emergency brush and stump pickup.

• Approved a revision to city employment job descriptions which better identifies full-time, part-time and seasonal workers.

• Approved a contract to begin work on relocating the outfall location at the south sewage plant.

• Approved a contract for postage meter equipment and services for the WPD.

• Approved an easement agreement with the Kosciusko Community Hospital related to extending Phase I of the Lake City Greenway Project.

BOW members are Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Charlie Smith and Jerry Patterson.
