Three Warsaw Fire Department personnel were recognized Friday for their service during the Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety meeting.

Mayor Ernie Wiggins presented WFD captain Joseph Fretz and firefighters Ed Kipker and Danny Fifer with plaques for their service.

Fretz was recognized for being promoted to captain. He was promoted from lieutenant of the shift, and will now be a shift leader.

Kipker and Fifer were recognized for their 30 years of service with the department and their continual commitment of employment within the department.

The board also approved a new hire for WFD. Brent Fifer was hired to replace former firefighter Ken Shepherd, who retired Feb. 28 after 29 years of service with the department. Fifer's duties begin Sunday.

The letter thanks WPD Lt. Steve Adang for his work March 18 in conducting a polygraph examination and interview with a young man who confessed to raping and killing a 17-year-old Whitley County girl. That led to law enforcement officials discovering the girl's body that was hidden a short distance from her home.

The board also:- Approved a request from Warsaw Street Superintendent Lacy Francis to seek quotes to purchase a new garbage truck.

- Approved a $13,626.14 agreement between the city and Baker & Daniels to assist with providing legal services for the city to purchase the former National City Bank building for a new city hall.

- Approved the city contributing its yearly $25,000 for the city's facade improvement matching grant program.

- Approved a new job description for City Planner Jeremy Skinner to assist with stormwater quality control duties. The current storm water coordinator is leaving this month.

- Approved WPD applying for a 2011-2012 Victims of Crime Act grant for funding for the WPD victim assistance program.
