BOW OKs WPD Application For Equipment Grant

Posted
Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Friday approved the Warsaw Police Department applying for an electronic citation system equipment grant.

The grant is through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and if awarded will allow WPD to further invest in Indiana's Electronic Citation and Warning System.

The system is a statewide program administered by Indiana Supreme Court's Judicial Technology and Automation Committee that allows officers to electronically issue traffic tickets.

WPD already uses the system and at some point in the future will be required to submit all traffic tickets electronically, according to WPD Chief Perry Hunter.

There were 10,082 citations and warnings issued in Kosciusko County using the system in 2006-2007.

The department requested equipment for six full systems that if approved will be used in WPD patrol vehicles at a cost of $700 each. The total cost for six systems is $4,200.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute will reimburse the city for 75 percent of the total cost equalling $3,150.

If the grant is awarded, the city's match will be $1,050 and come out of the police department's equipment appropriation.

The board also approved a $28,764 contract between WPD and Embarq for the department to replace its current Embarq service agreement.

The board also:

n Approved a $2,750 contract between Warsaw and Image Group Inc., Syracuse, to design a map location on the Warsaw Web site that will show city park locations and city departments.

n Approved Cargill to supply salt bids for $55.90 per ton for the Warsaw Street Department and Warsaw Community School Corp.

n Approved a $44,897.56 contract for Niblock to complete the second phase of the Beyer Farm Trail south of Kosciusko Community Hospital.

The asphalt section of the trail will complete the connection from the recently constructed boardwalk and the original Beyer Farm Trail.

It also will connect Pike Lake Park and Campground to Hodges Subdivision at Lindberg Drive and also to Harrison Street.

n Approved a request from Warsaw Community Development Corp. to close downtown Warsaw streets for the Aug. 23 Downtown Days event.

Streets that will be closed Aug. 23 include Indiana Street between Main and Lake Street; and Lake Street between Main and Center Street.

n Approved 22 property appraisals to be conducted on property in Warsaw for easements for the Parker/Argonne improvement project.

The event will include a 5K run, BMX demonstration, a cruise-in, band and beverage tent.
