Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved Warsaw Police Department purchasing three vehicles Friday.

Warsaw Police Chief Scott Whitaker requested the department purchase three new police vehicles and said the 2010 budget supports the purchase.

The department will purchase three vehicles from Rice Ford for $58,332.02. A portion of the purchase, $20,000, will be paid out of the motor vehicle highway fund, and the remainder, $38,332.20, will be paid out of the police machinery and equipment appropriation from the 2010 Warsaw Police Department budget.

The vehicles will replace a 1999, 1998 and two 2000 Ford Crown Victorias that will be traded in for credit.

The board also approved Warsaw Police Department accepting a $8,343 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistant Grant through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

The grant will allow WPD to update its interview rooms by purchasing five video cameras and a digital video recorder to monitor interviews.

The department currently uses a DVD system for its interviews.

"We are trying to get better video and audio quality for our interview rooms," Whitaker said.
