Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Friday approved several Warsaw Police Department grants.
The board approved a motion allowing WPD to accept a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant for its Kosciusko County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team.
The grant will be used for equipment, training, and overtime for officers to investigate impaired driving and fatal and serious bodily injury crashes, according to WPD Chief Perry Hunter.
The board also:
n Approved a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant for the Kosciusko County DUI Task Force.
The grant pays overtime for officers to enforce impaired driving laws through sobriety check points.
n Approved WPD receiving a grant for its aggressive driving enforcement program. The grant permits WPD and the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department to pay officers overtime to address aggressive driving issues on U.S. 30 including red light running and speeding.
n Approved WPD to receive a Big City/Big County Seat Belt enforcement grant as part of Operation Pull Over. The grant pays overtime to officers to enforce seat belts, child restraints and impaired driving laws.
n Approved Warsaw Fire Department applying for a $201,403.07 K21 Foundation grant for the purchase and the construction of a fire training tower for the new fire training facility at the Warsaw Wastewater Treatment Plant facility.
The board also reviewed nine bids for the construction of an approximately 3,200 square-foot administration building and laboratory at the city's wastewater treatment plant number two.
Mayor Ernie Wiggins said the board will take the bids under advisement.
The board also approved the Warsaw Street Department purchasing a salt brine maker, two 2,500-gallon salt brine storage tanks and two slide in truck spraying systems. The total cost is $19,000 and there are funds in the street department main budget.
"One reason for this request is due to the salt shortage and increased cost," said Warsaw Street Superintendent Lacy Francis.
The slide in truck spraying system will slide into any of the department's one-ton dump trucks.
n Approved closing Center Street between Lake and Indiana Streets Oct. 24 from 4 to 10 p.m. Oct. 24 for the annual Halloween event "Spooktacular." The event will be Oct. 24 from 5 to 10 p.m. in Downtown Warsaw.
n Approved a request from the Wastewater Treatment Utility facility for $907.50 additional funds for Symbiot to complete a limited site investigation within the right of way immediately north of the former Tinkey property.
The area is located between Harding Street and the north/south alley located adjacent to the Baker Youth Club to the west.
n Approved a $9,500 contract between the city and Jones & Henry Engineers Ltd., Fort Wayne, to develop a plan to provide sanitary sewer service for an area zoned industrial at Deeds Creek, Biomet Drive, Hickman Ditch and Husky Trail.
The sewer service plan will be developed for a low pressure system using the existing three-inch force main.
