Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Friday approved a contract to investigate connecting the Lake City Greenway in Winona Lake and Warsaw. The $2,280 contract is between the municipalities and A&Z Professional Engineering Services. Winona Lake’s Lake City Greenway trail currently ends where Park Avenue intersects with Winona Avenue. Trail users who want to continue any destinations west of the area must then travel in the roadway because there are not dedicated sidewalks or bicycle facilities. The town is interested in the possibility of providing some type of dedicated pathway for bicycles and pedestrians along the south side of Winona Avenue, connecting the existing trail to the City of Warsaw YMCA building on Smith Street, and possibly even further west to the fairgrounds. The general plan is to widen and rehabilitate the pavement on the south side of the road to provide a shoulder area for the cyclists and pedestrians. The project also would require placement of appropriate incidental elements for safety considerations, including signage and pavement markings. A&Z will provide Winona Lake and Warsaw with an engineering assessment, conceptual layout and opinion of construction costs for placement of a feasible bicycle and pedestrian pathway along the south side of Winona Avenue connecting to the existing trail to the YMCA building. In other business, the board approved Oakwood Cemetery purchasing a new mower from Bobcat of Warsaw for $7,540 and a one-ton dump truck for $31,675 from Kerlin Motor Co. The board also:– Approved a six-month bi-weekly pay increase from $1,438.22 to $1,534.44 for probationary Warsaw Police Department patrol officer Ronald Nethaway Jr. n Approved a road closure for the Sept. 2 First Friday for Buffalo Street between Market Street and the alley north of the municipal parking lot. – Approved a $450 contract between the parks department and Joni Crip, Animal Grams, for pony rides for Celebration Latina Sept. 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Central Park. – Approved Warsaw Fire Department accepting a $2,000 Kosciusko REMC Operation RoundUp Grant for funds for Play It Safe Family Safety Day Sept. 10 – Approved a $1,550 contract between WFD and Mark Rothstein’s World of Rope Jumping for Family Safety Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rothstein is a nationally renowned rope jumper who has been inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame.
