Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Thursday approved accepting a grant for a nine-hole disc golf course at Lucerne Park.
Tim Dombrosky, assistant city planner, informed the board Kosciusko County Convention Recreation and Visitors Commission awarded the city a $4,800 grant for the course. It will be finished by September when tournaments will occur, and the commission is willing to support future expansion of the course if it goes to 18 holes, Dombrosky said.
“To me this is a no brainer for the $4,800 contribution,” Charlie Smith, board member, said.
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer thanked Dombrosky for his efforts.
“You struck a nerve with someone and got results,” Thallemer said.
Jo Paczkowski, Visitors Commission president, said in the grant award letter, “The commission is very excited to aid in the development of this new recreational activity within the county. The commission recognizes the potential of this course to draw visitors and tournaments so it voiced its full support for the future growth of this course to 18 holes,” Paczkowski said.
The board of works, during its June 19 meeting, approved the parks department applying for the grant.
The board also approved a request from Jennifer Whitaker, human resources director, to hire an additional employee to assist with the building commissioner’s job duties.
The board also reviewed two bids for the Mariners Drive Rehabilitation project.
The bids include $551,986 from Niblock Excavating and $549,970 from Phend & Brown. The board will take the bids under advisement and approve them at the July 17 meeting.
The work is for landscape and items such as curbs, pavement rehab, drives and other items along Mariners Drive between North Pointe Drive and Husky Trail.
The board also approved a temporary alley closure from noon to midnight July 11 for set up and removal of tables for a wedding reception.
Jeff Grose, board member, thanked Mike Brubaker, Warsaw-Wayne Township fire territory fire chief, and the mayor for their assistance during an emergency call at Warsaw Community High School.
In other business, the board approved  hourly salaries for James Price, street equipment operator, at $16.05 an hour; Aaron Bakian, street mechanic, at $16.94 an hour; Robert Ferguson, at $17.68 an hour; and Roger Sarber, street supervisor, at $18 an hour.
