Booze Board Targets Gambling Devices - Again

Posted

Gambling devices were again addressed during the Kosciusko County Alcohol and Beverage Commission meeting Thursday, with three gambling violations cited between two establishments.

Robin Watters, owner of Rex's Rendezvous, Buffalo Street, Warsaw, went before the board to renew the establishment's liquor license after being cited for housing unlawful gambling devices.

This was the second violation for Rex's, which was found to have the devices inside its bar two years ago.

"One more violation and we will recommend the loss of your license," ABC member Elim Smith said. "You've been here for a long time and we'd hate to see that have to happen."

American Legion Post 253, North Webster, also received its second violation for the gambling machines. Dave Welker, who represented the Legion, admitted the establishment received its second violation within two months of its first transgression last year.

An excise officer reported finding the machines at the location Sept. 9 and again Nov. 18.

"Two violations in two months makes us think that you don't care," Smith said.

An excise officer also reported a lack of cooperation by individuals inside the Legion while the investigation was being conducted. Welker said the incidents were "extremely poor judgement" on the part of the Legion.

Welker's request for a renewal was tabled by the ABC due to a prior motion by the Legion to dismiss the violations.

The commission also approved a license renewal for Mi Lindo Acapulco, Center Street, Warsaw, before adjourning.
