BOURBON – Despite working hard and playing during the school's spring break vacation, Triton's varsity baseball team was still able to take it easy Wednesday against the visiting Oregon-Davis Bobcats. Winning 17-1 in a shortened, five-inning game at Ken Keller Field, the Triton Trojans (1-1) posted five steals and were patient at the plate, drawing 17 walks, while posting five hits. "We stayed pretty disciplined," Triton coach James Shively said. "There were a few pitches that we swung at that we probably shouldn't have. You get overanxious at times, but I think they did alright." Senior Marc Lindsey had the best pitches to swing at, going 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs, a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Also for Triton, sophomore Seth Flenar had two hits in three at-bats, recording two RBIs in the process. "When we did get some (to hit), we hit them pretty hard and put them into play, which is what we're trying to do," Shively said. The Trojans scored three runs in both the first and second innings, nine in third and two more in the fourth. Oregon-Davis scored its lone run in the third inning. While Triton's batters were drawing walk after walk, junior Seth Glingle kept things going from the mound, going all five innings, striking out five and surrendering just three hits. "I thought Glingle did a pretty good job of pitching," Shively said. "He was throwing strikes, getting ahead of hitters and making them put it in play." And it's that kind of pitching the Trojans will need if they're going to be successful in 2012. "If we can be solid on the mound, I think we can be pretty good," Shively said. "We have eight guys returning that were regulars in the lineup and in the field last year. We're pretty strong, but we did lose our top two pitchers (Jordan Koontz and Maxx Ullery) from last year. If our pitching can be solid, we'll be OK." Triton returns to the diamond Friday, travelling west on US 30 to take on the Plymouth Pilgrims. The junior varsity game is scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by the varsity contest.
