A back-and-forth game that featured five lead changes and four ties in the first half turned into a double-digit loss Tuesday night for the Warsaw Lady Tigers. Hosting the Fort Wayne Bishop Luers Lady Knights, Warsaw was on the wrong end of an 18-2 run in the second half and fell 47-36. The outcome, as well as the Lady Tigers' play, was much different from Saturday, when Warsaw got off to a slow start but pulled away over the final three quarters en route to a season-opening win. In the loss to Luers, the Lady Tigers made 8 of 22 field goal attempts in the first half and just 5 of 20 in the second half. “With a young team, we knew there would be some ups and downs,” said Warsaw coach Michelle Harter, whose team features three sophomores in the starting lineup and four more on the bench. “We'll take some positive things from this, and some things we need to get better at before Friday.” The Lady Tigers, now 1-1 on the season, host county rival Tippecanoe Valley Friday and then travel to Noblesville Saturday. With Tuesday’s game knotted at 24-24, Luers went on an 18-2 run to take control of the game and post its first win of the season. Just three days after a 54-point loss to Class 2A No. 1 Heritage Christian, the Lady Knights hardly looked like an 0-3 team. “They've played some good teams,” Harter said of Luers, which had lost to Angola, Northridge and Heritage Christian by 16, 17 and 54 points, respectively. “That was their fourth game of the season, and just our second. That's a big difference. They're a nice team. They play hard, they rebound and (Emma) Wolfe is a tremendous offensive player.” Wolfe, a 5-foot-8 junior guard, led Luers with a game-high 22 points. She also added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Wolfe accounted for five of Luers’ seven made three-pointers. “We weren't communicating and getting through screens,” said Harter. “Several times we just lost her (Wolfe). We didn't get a hand in her face. We dropped off her and she would just shoot in our face.” Kayla Knapke and Grace Everett scored six points each for the Lady Knights, while Kate Prendergast added five points, and Kathryn Knapke and Emilia Miles finished with four points each. For Warsaw, senior Pam Miller led the way with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Dayton Groninger scored 11 points and senior Jodie Carlson added eight points and seven boards.
