The public had the opportunity for the first time Tuesday to tour Biomet's new Orthopaedic Skills Academy.
The $3.5 million academy in Warsaw opened Aug. 1 and is located on the east side of Biomet's main building. The 27,000 square-foot facility features two instructional labs and a 48-seat auditorium with power point screens.
"The academy will improve orthopaedic care by offering a world-class training center for surgeons that will allow them to enhance their surgical skills," said Jeff Binder, Biomet CEO.
Binder said the facility will provide surgeons with a hands-on learning experience.
Kevin Cox, the academy's director, gave tours of the facility Tuesday.
"The purpose of the academy is to train orthopedic surgeons, fellows, residents and surgeons in a safe and effective way to use our products," Cox said.
Cox said the academy has already had a significant amount of use since it opened in August.
He said there have been 15 events at the facility and there are 25 labs that have been scheduled now until October.
The academy features two labs that have a total of 12 stations where surgeons can operate on cadavers, watching a surgeon instructor on TV monitors.
Live surgery taking place off-site can also be beamed to monitors in the labs and auditorium. The facility also has a conference room.
The academy is an educational program specifically designed for healthcare professionals.
Its goal is to unite members of the orthopedic community to improve their knowledge, enhance their understanding of innovative surgical techniques and present the latest in biomedical research and development.
