Area bicyclists will have the chance to enjoy the spring weather and help support research to fight cancer in children at the North Webster Saint Jude Bike Ride, June 6.
The event is an expansion of a ride that has been held for children over the past 10 years. This year the ride is open to bicyclists of all ages. Cyclists will have a 12-, 25- and 55-mile ride to choose from. "I'm really hoping for a lot of families," said Carole Gilbert, North Webster, one of the ride organizers. All three rides will begin and end at the North Webster Community Center, 301 N. Main St., North Webster. Cyclists can register for the ride online at www.northwebster.com/bike.htm or at the community center the day of the ride 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fifty-five mile riders must start no later then 8 a.m.
The registration fee for the ride is $15 for an individual or $25 for a family. Gilbert said $1 of each registration fee will go to the Indiana Bicycle Coalition and the remainder will go to support St. Jude Children Research Hospital, a pediatric cancer research center.
All rides will have SAG support. The routes of each ride will be marked and maps will be distributed to cyclists. Gilbert described the routes for each ride as mostly flat with rolling hills. "It's just beautiful country back roads," she said.
Helmets are required for the ride and cyclists younger than 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
Caricaturist Mark Daniels will also be on hand to sketch cyclists.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital works to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. St. Jude covers all costs of treatment at St. Jude for those reimbursed by third-party insurers and total costs at St. Jude when no insurance is available. St. Jude also provides assistance with transportation costs and local living expenses during treatments. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay.
