LEESBURG - Bids have been opened and references have been checked.
Monday night, Leesburg Town Council members approved a motion to take GRW Engineering's recommendation for the contractor to build the town's sewer system.Midwest Trenchless Services, of Grant, Mich., was the low bidder on the project, which will cost approximately $2.5 million for construction.
Jay Tierney, GRW Engineering, said the firm checked Midwest Trenchless Services' references and everything was acceptable.
Ten bids were received for the project.
Now that the contractor has been chosen for the project, the information will be forwarded to the Department of Rural Development.
Once the engineering agreement for the contractor is approved by Rural Development, the town will meet with Umbaugh and Associates to determine rates for sewer services. Once that is complete, a rate hearing will be held.
Closing on the project is expected in June, and construction will begin in June or July. The project is estimated to take about 10 months to complete.
In other business, the council:
n Gave permission for Street Commissioner Ed Riordan and Town Clerk Melissa Robinson to look into applying for funds from INDOT for 2012. The money, which will be applied for soon, could be used for resurfacing projects in the town.
n Heard the town's spring/summer newsletter is being prepared.
n Heard Leesburg Garage Sales will be June 14.
n Decided to put a plan to repave Baseline Road on hold until the sewer construction in that area is finished. Since there is a possibility that the road could be damaged during sewer construction, the council decided to wait until later to repave the road. Council members said they know the road is bad, but they don't want to spend the money only to have to repair the road again once the sewer is done.
Leesburg Town Council members are Rick Stookey, president; Jay Weaver and Ryan Robinson.
