ATWOOD - An 8-year-old girl was seriously injured Wednesday evening when her bicycle was struck by a car.

Jacquline R. Egolf, CR 525W, Warsaw, was listed in critical condition this morning at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, with internal chest injuries.

Egolf was riding her bicycle north on CR 525W to the intersection of Old Road 30W, near Atwood, at 5:53 p.m. Wednesday. According to police reports, Egolf apparently did not stop at the stop sign of the intersection.

Andrea M. Baker, 19, CR 600E, Pierceton, was driving her car west on Old Road 30 when Egolf reportedly rode out in front of her.

Baker told police she tried to avoid the collision but could not. The car hit the bicycle in the middle of Old Road 30, then travelled into a yard, striking a highway sign and a tree.

A witness told police that Egolf did not look or stop at the stop sign before she crossed into the traffic lanes of Old Road 30. Police also reported that that section of road slopes down toward Old Road 30.

Egolf was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital then airlifted to Parkview, where she is in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Baker was treated at KCH for neck injuries and released. Damage to her car was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department investigated the accident. Indiana State Police and Multi-Township Emergency Medical Service assisted at the scene.
