Bible On Women

Editor, Times-Union:

This letter is in reply to Mr. Boggs' letter on "Women Preachers."

Let me first tell you that I am encouraged to see someone seeking out the truth of the Word of God and not just taking what people say as truth. Now the first thing I would like to address is your statement that "you can't say there weren't women preachers or prophetesses in the Bible." I do agree that there are women prophetesses in the Bible and in all the places you cited, but just because it says something in the Bible does not mean we should do it. If that were so I could justify murder, homosexuality, fornication, lust, drunkenness and the list would go on and on.

When you study the Bible you need to make sure that you are looking at the context of what you are reading. Take and open to First Timothy where Paul has been released from prison and prior to his final imprisonment. Paul instructs Timothy in chapter one to stay where he is and to teach, and in chapter two Paul gives talks on the importance of prayer, and then in verse nine talks on modesty, and then take the time to read 11-15.

Without getting into some theological argument, I just want you and other readers to take the time to read the whole context and not ignore the instruction of the Word. In the New Testament there is so much instruction on how the church should be run and Christian life. Just because the women you mentioned may have been prophetesses by no means means that they pastored and led a church congregation. God created the family structure and this is evident through all of His Word, and he also had the church set up on the same family structure with the man being the leader of the structure.

So please take time to understand what your reading before you build a theology on few sets narrative of verses. God Bless you, and Merry Christmas. And don't forget to share the roads with tractors.
