Beloved Pet

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

On July 25 at approximately 2 p.m., we lost our friend and family pet.

He was more than just a dog; he had become a part of our family. He was a true friend to both me and my husband. He was a good protector. He loved long walks to the woods and truck rides. He was great with kids, although kids were afraid of him because he was so big. He'll be greatly missed.

Unfortunately for us, we live on a busy road. Bear had been taught to stay away from the road but on this day there was an Amish buggy traveling west down the road. For some reason he went out to chase the horse. Our daughter and her boyfriend were there and he saw that Bear was close to the road. The Amish buggy stopped so the dog wouldn't chase them, but Bear continued out into the road. He was in the westbound lane but close to the middle, and a blue Chevy Silverado was heading east. The truck had plenty of time to stop completely. He didn't even attempt to slow down, honk or swerve. The man hit Bear in his rear hind area, which shows that Bear could have been avoided. The driver stopped about 50 yards away, got out of his vehicle and said, "Sorry about your dog but he was in the road." So I guess in their eyes it was OK to hit him. I guess I should be glad it was the dog and not a human being.

I don't understand how someone could be so cruel that they would hit someone's pet. Not even try to avoid the accident. They had to have seen that the Amish buggy was trying to avoid an accident. They had to have seen my daughter's boyfriend running toward the road trying to get Bear back to safety. It would have taken one minute out of their day to stop and let us get Bear back to the yard, but in one quick moment they chose to take our friend from us. I just don't know how you two guys in the Chevy Silverado could live with yourself. You didn't just hit our dog, you took our best friend away from us.

You'll never be forgotten, Bear, we will always love you.
