Bell Memorial Library's Summer Reading Program Is A Success

MENTONE - Bell Memorial Public Library's Summer Reading Program, "Get A Clue @ Your Library," was a huge success.

The program was open to kids ages 2-14 years old. Prizes were given out in four-hour increments. Those who read at least 30 hours received a free "Get A Clue" t-shirt. Participants who completed the program by reading at least 40 hours also received a free book and a stuffed "Ike" detective dog purchased at Kohl's. There were 97 participants in the program this year and they read for a combined total of 2,325 hours.

This year's entertainment programs included: Free Movie Mondays where kids came to the library to watch newly released DVDs on a big movie screen and eat free popcorn. Silly Safari's Live Animal Show came back to the library for their fourth visit to kick off the summer reading program and entertained the audience with a variety of interesting animals. Campfire Kev came to the library for the first time with his slew of disguises and helped the kids crack a secret code and become secret agents. This year's mascot, "Ike" the detective dog, hosted two story and a craft hours that were a hit with the kids. Kids came and listened to Ike read stories and made Perler Bead projects. Larry Wirtz entertained the participants with some amazing magic tricks to help us conclude our summer reading program.

This year's fourth annual Strawberry Awards Young Author's Contest had kids writing mysteries. Grand Champion this year was Gabi Bradley's "Miley The Magnificent And The Missing Guitar."

Winners for the 3-year-old age group were: first place, Izzi Bradley's "At The Beach"; second place, Branson McBrier's "The Ghost."

Winners in the 4-6-year-olds were: first place, Mackenzie Bird, "Laga The Missing Horse"; second place, Brianna McBrier, "I Lost My Rabbit."

Winners in the 7-8-year-olds were: Hannah Drudge, "The Mystery Of The Invisible House"; second place, Mallory Walerko, "Elly And The Stinky Fluffy Shoe Thing."

Winners in the 9-12-year-olds were: first place, Elizabeth Shepherd, "Children's Zoo Chaos"; second place, Brynda Krueger, "Sally's Flower."

Honorable Mention winners were "The Peach" by Blake McBrier and "The Mystery Of The Lost Shoe" by Elizabeth Salazar.

To go along with the library's mystery theme, this year participants who read at least five mystery books became a Super Sleuth and earned a bag of extra detective prizes and coupons. Super Sleuths are Gabi Bradley, Hannah Drudge, Casimir Kromkowski, Josh Petgen, Elizabeth Salazar, Mateo Salazar, Anne Secrest, John Paul Secrest, Elizabeth Shepherd, Mallory Walerko and Braden Wadkins.

Summer Reading Program Participants who read 40 hours or more, completed the reading program, received a free book, t-shirt and stuffed "Ike" dog: Branigan Bahney, Marisha Bahney, Victoria Bahney, Shelby Baker, Mackenzie Bird, Anna Blaker, Gabi Bradley, Jessie Demske, Hannah Drudge, Jamie French, Damion Kohler, Kennedy Kohler, AJ Long, Blake McBrier, Mordichi McVay, Malaichi McVay, Matthew Newman, Cameron Patton, Chris Patton, Josh Petgen, Isaiah Ruiz, Paul Schaeffer, Sydney Schaeffer, Anne Secrest, John Paul Secrest, Elizabeth Shepherd, Emily Shepherd, Elizabeth Teel, Sam Teel, Thomas Teel, Braden Wadkins, Mallory Walerko, Emily Weaver and Evan Weaver.

Read 30 to 39 hours and received a free t-shirt: Donald Bradley, Floyd Bradley, Izzi Bradley, Brittany Childers, Emily Childers, Hannah Dalrymple, Ty Doan, Patrick Hughes, Alex Kromkowski, Casimir Kromkowski Michael Paseka.

Read 20 to 29 hours: Braxton Blevins, Kyla Blevins, Belamie Carlin, Ashley Childers, Cody Demske, Jacob Dixon, Darian Doan, Micah Hume, Kaitlyn Lewis, Tristyn Lewis, Drake Manwaring, Branson McBrier, Brianna McBrier, Jared Mikel, Katelyn Petgen and Arika Warren.
