Be Careful What You Watch

Editor, Times-Union:
Oscar Wilde once said, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” That may seem counterintuitive, but there is a lot of merit to that statement. After all, art gives us an image of what we could be or want to be.
Especially when we’re young, art gives a way to see the world. It shows relationships, dreams, and values. Its ability to connect emotionally, meanwhile, makes it easier to remember than our education. Often we find it as a place to live out our fantasies and receive us a path forward in life.
For that reason, we need to be careful if the content we consume is actually good for us. More than just its appropriateness, what we consume can become part of how we see the world and what our values are when making decisions. Though censorship is not feasible, temperance is necessary when indulging in media.
It’s important that we make sure content for children is respectful to their development and avoids indoctrination. After all, they are the most impressionable and thus most likely to take in messages without analysis. Never forget: Kids grow up, and what they watch determines what art our life imitates.
