MISHAWAKA -ÊSouth Bend Washington's Jacqueline Batteast showed why she was named the All-Metro player of the year Thursday night as she stole the show in the South Bend Tribune All-Star Game as the All-Metro team downed the All-Area team 90-79.
Batteast, who is bound for Division I Notre Dame, led the metro team on the floor and set a new scoring record in the game with 36 points. She also pulled down nine rebounds, grabbed two steals and dished out three assists in 29 minutes.
Batteast scored the first two baskets of the game and helped the metro team jump out to a 12-0 lead with 17:28 left in the first half.
LaPorte's Brooke Reed scored the first basket for the area team at the 17:17 mark to make the score 12-2. From the 16:15 mark to the 11:41 point, the area team outscored the metro team 18-6 to take a 21-20 lead.
A large part of that run can be credited to Rochester's Jill Bair, who netted six of the 18 points and provided a much needed spark for the Area squad.
The remainder of the first half saw 10 lead changes, and the area team took a 42-39 advantage into the locker room.
Triton's Betsy Salyer scored the first basket of the second half to extend the area lead to 44-39. The area squad held the lead until the 16:20 mark of the second half when Batteast hit a basket to give metro a 48-47 lead.
Metro held the lead for the rest of the game as Batteast scored 22 points in the second half.
The metro team outscored the area team 51-37 in the second half.
The metro squad outrebounded the area team 72-58. However, the metro team committed 39 turnovers to the area team's 17.
The area team set a record for field goal attempts with 111 (27 of 111, 24.3 percent).
"Our shots went down much better in the first half than in the second half," said area head coach Kem Zolman. "We were really guard-heavy, and I think that's one of the reasons we put up so many shots."
Batteast lead all scorers with 36 points and was named the metro MVP. Jill Bair tallied 27 points and was named the area MVP.
For the metro squad, Elkhart Memorial's Liz Lewis added 16 points, Mishawaka Marian's Emily Creachbaum had nine, and South Bend Washington's Jill Barnbrook had seven.
On the area side, Lesley Blackburn had 12 points, John Glenn's Chasity Zellers 11, and Reed and Rochester's Tessa Bair added six each. Salyer had five points and 13 rebounds, while NorthWood's Kasey Chamberlin tossed in four points and dished out four assists.
"This was a lot of fun," said Kem Zolman. "It's a great honor to be recognized by your peers. I didn't have to do much, just sit there and help them if they needed it. This was a great group of girls."
Wawasee's Shanna Zolman, NorthWood's Carol Duncan and Triton's Ashli Senff also were named to the All-Area team, but IHSAA rules prohibit them from playing because they are underclassmen.
