Bat Gives Boy Rabies

Posted
A Kosciusko County boy who was bitten by a rabid bat should fully recover.

Kosciusko County Animal Control Officer Jerry Clase responded to an animal bite Sunday in the northern part of the county.

The Kosciusko County Health Department contacted Clase late Wednesday to advise that the test results had returned from Indianapolis and that the bat did return positive for rabies.

The boy is being treated for rabies. The treatment requires a series of shots and lasts about a month.

Kosciusko County Health Department Administrator Bob Weaver said he didn't know that they've ever received a positive rabies test after a bat bite. Weaver said the departments does get several reports of bats with rabies each year.
