Balloonfest Starts Tonight

City of Lakes Balloonfest '99 kicks off today at 5 p.m. at Central Park with a concert featuring "Random Play," "Ambrosia" and the "Classic Rock All-Stars."

At 6 p.m., a ski show by the Lake City Skiers will be held at Hidden Lake. The first balloon launch of the weekend will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Warsaw Airport.

Saturday events begin at 6 a.m. with a balloon launch at the Warsaw Airport. The Optimists are hosting a pancake and sausage breakfast at 6:30 a.m., also at the airport.

Winona Lake Park will be the site of the adult triathlon beginning at 8 a.m., while Central Park will be the site of a frisbee tournament. The triathlon is sponsored by National City, Warsaw Optimist Breakfast Club, Warsaw Cut Glass and the City of Lakes Balloonfest.

Spike's Beach Grill is sponsoring a four-man volleyball tournament at 10 a.m.

Registration for the tournament is due by 5 p.m. today. Teams can be any mix of four people. Fee is $48 and proceeds benefit the Bowen Center.

All participants will receive T-shirts and water bottles.

Overall winners will receive trophies, and various companies have donated prizes. Rabb Water is donating water for the day.

"It should be a good day. It should be a warm day," said Scott Woods, Spike's.

At the airport Saturday from noon to 8 p.m., gyrocopters and powered parachutes will be on display. John Kennedy Jr.'s powered parachute will be showcased. There will be children's carnival games and food booths. The food booths benefit the Kosciusko County Domestic Violence Task Force.

A skateboard competition at Mantis Park will begin at 1 p.m. and the Marsh Acrobatic Team Air Show will be at 5 p.m.

A balloon launch will be at 6:30 p.m. at the airport with a balloon glow at 8 p.m.

Sunday at 6 a.m. will be the last balloon launch at the airport.

Proceeds of the Balloonfest go to Kosciusko County community service organizations.
