NORTH WEBSTER - The North Webster town board welcomed new officer J.D. Ayers to the department Tuesday.

Ayers has 10 years of experience with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, five as a detective. A native of Wabash and 1996 graduate of the academy, Ayers and his wife Deborah are both looking forward to the new position.

Ayers, a father of two daughters, said that he is, "Looking forward to getting to know the people better in a smaller community."

Board member Jon Sroufe said he is pleased to have Ayers on the department. He said, "J.D. brings a high level of expertise to the force." Ayers will replace Officer Jeff Wampler, who is pursing a career with the State Police. Wampler's last day is Aug. 24.

The vacation of a street in Willis Park is still on the table. Property owners Jon and Darlene Stewart want to add on to their existing structure, which is conditional on the ability to vacate the street.

The fire department wants to obtain a permit to install a dry hydrant at the end of the street for an estimated cost of $3,000.

The Stewarts are willing to incur the cost of the hydrant. The board agreed to look into the proposal further, but want to see sketches of the intended improvements, which will allow an easement to the water's edge.

A replacement meter was installed at the wastewater treatment plant due to lightning damage from the July 14 storm.

Public Works Superintendent Dennis Reafsnyder reported the sidewalk improvement program is completed.

He is also in the process of obtaining quotes for materials for the sewer extension project. There is a four to six week lead time for materials, but the goal is to have project completed by year-end.

The town budget meeting is scheduled for Sept. 5 and 12, at 8:30 a.m. at the town hall.
